An American Company with a Global Vision
- George Matouk
- John Matouk & Co., Inc.
We have an ethos at John Matouk & Co. Our company, which makes and sells luxury linens, and which was founded by my grandfather in 1929, is a proudly American company. But what this means to us is more nuanced than what I think a lot of people mean when they say this. For us, to be an American company doesn’t mean that every single thing we make has to be made, start to finish, here in the United States. We believe that the American experience is filled with ingenuity, optimism, and collaboration with other world class manufacturers. It’s about bringing the best people and products from around the world together to do great things in innovative ways to serve the US market better than anyone else.
Matouk has always been about fine craftsmanship. Under my grandfather’s and then my father’s leadership, we were mostly focused on the kind of fine table linens that were falling out of fashion when I finished business school in the 1990s and joined the business. In addition, the American textile industry was struggling at this time. Our long-time suppliers, all of them domestic companies, were going out of business. From both a product and a supplier perspective, it was time to make some changes.
